Asia, 1650

Another one from Henny Savenije's great collection.

Today's map is a mid-17th century work by N. Sanson d'Abbeville depicting Asia and the Horn of Africa. The way the political borders are drawn up reminds us of Asia on a Risk map. A big thanks to Mr. Savenije for sharing this map with us!

Remember to send your maps to us; we'll feature them here on the frontpage!

Very nice map indeed. Is there something written on the back of the map? Looks like black ink shining through? What is that writing about? Can the owner tell us more?

Very good eye! An unknown family's genealogy is apparently written on the back of that map. Mr. Savenije has been generous enough to share the image of the back of the map also. I'm not certain if any more information is known, but if Mr. Savenije is reading this, perhaps he can comment upon it.

I will quickly make a new posting with the image of the back of the map.

I really loved reading your blog. It was very well authored and easy to understand. Unlike additional blogs I have read which are really not good. I also found your posts very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well!
