Our First Map!

A great map to get things rolling!

Many thanks to our first contributor. The owner tells us that this fine piece of cartographic art in the Mercator style is from 1607 and displays the Abruzzo and Terra di Lovoro [sic] regions of Italy. Great map!

Be sure to send us your maps and we'll display them here!

I am always amazed by how well-maintained many of these much older maps are.

I absolutely agree. To think that something could last in such such for over 400 years is quite extraordinary. A great find.

This map was indeed first issued by Jodocus Hondius in 1607, appearing in his "Atlas Minor". That atlas was a reduced version of Mercator’s "Atlas." In the early 1620's the original copper plates were obtained by several London booksellers and were reprinted in "Purchas His Pilgrimage" (1624-26) and "Historia Mundi or Mercators Atlas." (1635, 37 and 39). A nice map!
